Pushing the boundaries of engineering innovation
How did you get into what you do?
I began my career as an apprentice electrician, learning the trade from the ground up, as they say. Electrical safety was instilled in us from the very beginning, and that early focus sparked a deeper interest in the broader scope of health, safety, environment and quality (HSEQ).
How has your career progressed since?
I spent 18 years at Skanska, gaining valuable experience across various operational units. This allowed me to broaden my perspective and develop expertise in different areas of the business. In 2023, I joined Phoenix ME, returning to my roots in electrical supervision and management. Today, I lead the HSEQ team, a role that’s both challenging and rewarding, particularly in its engagement with colleagues across both office and site environments.
What skills do you need to be good at your job?
Technical knowledge, practical skill and experience drawn from real-world situations are essential in this field. Just as important are strong communication skills, particularly active listening. I enjoy working with people and believe in empowering them. Everyone brings unique behaviours, attitudes and attributes to the table, all of which directly impact outcomes. Understanding those differences is key to making meaningful progress.
What do you enjoy most about your current role at Phoenix?
No two days are the same, and that variety keeps me on my toes. The continual challenges drive my growth, and there’s rarely a day that doesn’t present an opportunity to learn something new. I value having time to reflect, share insights and learn collaboratively across teams and departments.
Why is HSEQ important in our business?
HSEQ is at the heart of everything we do at Phoenix ME. In an industry so driven by tight programmes, it’s vital we get things right the first time, executing tasks to a high standard, minimising environmental impact and, above all, ensuring our people carry out their work safely. At the end of the day, making sure everyone gets home safely isn’t just good practice, it’s what makes long-term sustainability and healthy growth possible.
How do you challenge yourself to reach new heights?
I challenge myself through the way I lead. I believe in creating a culture where my team feels empowered to challenge me, just as I challenge them. That openness fosters new ideas, greater efficiency and a healthy working environment, one where people genuinely want to be. It’s this dynamic that naturally drives us forward.
What has been your proudest achievement at Phoenix so far?
Building a team that delivers innovation and supports one another in reducing incident rates has been incredibly fulfilling.
What Phoenix value resonates most with you?
Togetherness. There’s no ‘I’ in team, and no individual will ever achieve as much alone as they can alongside others. Collaboration is the foundation of everything we do, and it’s what makes success possible.
