Pushing the boundaries of engineering innovation
How did you get into what you do?
I was in a different career that never really clicked for me. When I joined the British Safety Council, I was inspired by the team and discovered a genuine interest in Health & Safety. That experience pushed me to pursue it as a full-time career.
How has your career progressed since?
With each role, I’ve built on my experience and expanded my knowledge. Every step has helped me grow, both technically and professionally, especially in understanding how to improve safety culture in different settings.
What skills do you need to be good at your job?
Communication is key, along with curiosity and a strong ethical approach. You need to be able to ask the right questions, understand behaviours, and stay consistent in decision-making. Adaptability is also important in such a fast-changing field.
What do you enjoy most about your current role at Phoenix?
The chance to make a real difference. Whether it’s introducing better systems or supporting safer ways of working, I enjoy being able to improve how things are done across the business.
Why is HSEQ important in our business?
It underpins everything. Without a strong focus on health, safety, environment and quality, we simply couldn’t operate. It keeps people safe, protects our reputation, and ensures we deliver projects the right way.
How do you challenge yourself to reach new heights?
By constantly learning, whether it’s new tools, regulations or methods. I always look for ways to apply what I’ve learned to improve how we work.
What has been your proudest achievement at Phoenix so far?
Rolling out innDex across the business. It’s helped streamline processes and improve safety management, and it’s great to see it being used so effectively.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get into what you do?
You need a mix of knowledge, experience, and attitude. Start with what you have, but be willing to learn the rest. Staying open-minded and committed to improvement is essential.
Why Phoenix?
The culture. Phoenix encourages progress, innovation and doing things properly. It’s a place where change is welcomed, not resisted.
What Phoenix value resonates most with you?
Innovation. In a fast-moving industry, we have to keep evolving. Embracing new technology and ideas helps us stay ahead.
