Pushing the boundaries of engineering innovation
How did you get into what you do?
When I left school, I was offered an electrical installation apprenticeship with an Essex M&E contractor, which I gratefully accepted and successfully completed
How has your career progressed since?
Since gaining my gold card, I have progressed through roles from electrician supervisor, and construction manager to my current position as a project manager.
What skills do you need to be good at your job?
To be an effective Project Manager, I believe you need a mix of site experience ‘on the tools,’ technical knowledge, project management skills, leadership, and strong communication abilities.
What do you enjoy most about your current role at Phoenix?
Phoenix has a great family feel. Even though we’re bigger than ever now, I still feel like I’m working with good friends and always have someone to turn to for advice or support.
Outside of delivering projects, what else are you involved in at Phoenix ME?
Phoenix holds many social, sporting, and charity events that I like to get involved with whenever I can. It’s always nice to mix with workmates outside of work and in different environments to build stronger friendships
How do you challenge yourself to reach new heights?
Long-distance running is my thing! I recently completed a 110-mile race along the Yorkshire coastline and moors. I find these runs are the perfect way to relieve stress and boost my mood. It’s not about the race itself—it’s about being out there, in your head, figuring things out.
What has been your proudest achievement at Phoenix so far?
I have many proud moments at Phoenix and find it hard to pick just one specific moment. Of course, I love the completion of a project—knowing the hours, hard work, and commitment I, along with the team, have put in to achieve it. But I also value the smaller wins, whether it’s early handovers of areas, weekend power changeovers, resolving coordination issues early, maintaining a strong safety record throughout, or mentoring junior supervisors and construction managers to help them reach their full potential.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get into what you do?
Start by gaining solid site experience. You need a strong understanding of electrical systems, drawings, and how they come together on-site. Watch how good project managers handle pressure and keep things moving. Don’t be afraid to take on responsibility gradually and always be the one who follows up, don’t just assume something is complete.
Why Phoenix?
Phoenix is a company that genuinely values doing things properly, from the quality of the installations to the way people are treated. There’s a strong sense of teamwork and a genuine family feel, and I’ve always felt supported in taking ownership of my projects. It’s a place where high standards are the norm, yet people remain down-to-earth. That balance makes it a great environment for growth.
What Phoenix value resonates with you most?
The Phoenix value that resonates with me most is empowerment. As a Project Manager, I believe true leadership is about enabling others to thrive while taking responsibility for creating an environment where people feel confident to take initiative and make decisions.
Empowerment means trusting my team and giving them the tools, guidance, and autonomy they need to succeed. I stay actively involved at every stage, from planning and coordination to closeout, to control the process, support the team, remove obstacles, and ensure they have what they need to deliver their best work.
For me, it’s also about leading by example: staying accountable, communicating clearly, and being someone my team can rely on. When people feel empowered and supported, they take ownership of their roles, raise their standards, and contribute more meaningfully to the success of the project. Empowerment isn’t just about leadership; it’s about building a culture where everyone feels capable, trusted, and driven to succeed together.
