Pushing the boundaries of engineering innovation
How did you get into what you do?
I started out with a bachelor’s in civil engineering, where I became really interested in hydraulic design. After graduating, I worked as a project engineer focusing on domestic systems, drainage, and fire protection pipework. The company I worked for strongly promoted the use of BIM across all project stages, which made me realise how essential it is to use it properly. Seeing its impact on efficiency and collaboration inspired me to pursue a master’s in BIM in the UK, one of the first countries to make it mandatory in construction projects. The programme helped me dive deeper into how BIM can improve the entire project lifecycle, and now I’m even more convinced that it’s the future of the industry.
How has your career progressed since?
After finishing my master’s, I started working as a BIM Coordinator, which really helped me expand my knowledge of building services and gave me hands-on experience with BIM in real-world projects. Over time, I felt the need to approach things from a broader perspective, so I transitioned into a Coordination Manager role. In this position, I’m able to combine my expertise in building services with my understanding of BIM, all while developing my management skills. It’s been a great opportunity to grow both technically and professionally as I take on more responsibility in leading and overseeing projects.
What skills do you need to be good at your job?
There are a few key skills that are essential. First, a strong attention to detail is crucial, as I’m responsible for reviewing my team’s work and ensuring it aligns with the established quality standards. Effective time management is also vital; it’s important to be able to prioritise tasks, understand deadlines, and manage workloads efficiently. Lastly, communication skills are fundamental in my position. I oversee a team, and it’s my responsibility to clearly explain tasks and expectations, ensuring everyone understands their roles and delivers work accurately and on time.
What do you enjoy most about your current role at Phoenix?
What I enjoy most is the opportunity to contribute to large-scale and significant construction projects, such as HS2. Being part of such impactful work is both rewarding and motivating. Additionally, I’ve always aspired to take on a management role, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to lead and guide a team in this capacity. It’s a fulfilling experience to combine my passion for the industry with my leadership aspirations.
Why are BIM and digital construction so important in our business?
They are crucial to our business because they provide subcontractors with a clear and accurate visual representation of their designs, helping them understand how their work will come to life. This ensures better coordination between different services, aligning all elements of the construction process. As a result, it streamlines the workflow, reduces errors, and enhances the overall accuracy and efficiency of the project.
