What inspired you to become a Mental Health First Aider?
I feel that Mental Health is equally as important as physical health and can affect anyone, therefore I wanted to offer my support to really make a difference.
Can you describe your main responsibilities as a Mental Health First Aider?
I provide support as a key point of contact and direct individuals to further areas of support available to them.
What training did you go through to become a certified Mental Health First Aider?
I attended the MHFA two-day training course, this teaches in depth skills for providing First Aid to people who may be experiencing a wide range of Mental Health issues. As a follow up I attended a one-day refresher course.
How do you manage your own mental health while supporting others?
I have my own methods of managing my Mental Health and I recognise what helps me best, for example time out, fresh air, walking and general exercise.
What skills or qualities do you think are essential to be effective in this role?
To be a good listener, showing lots of understanding and empathy. Its also important to be non-judgmental and approachable, encouraging individuals to open up to me.
How do you encourage colleagues to prioritise their mental health?
Communication is key. It is important to be open and easily approachable. Too often, people bottle up issues and do not share problems they are struggling with on their own. I continually work to raise awareness and encourage conversation.
