Pushing the boundaries of engineering innovation
How did you get into what you do?
It all happened quite unexpectedly. I was an electrician engaged in commercial projects in London, attending college part-time with the goal of becoming an engineer. After successfully interviewing with Phoenix ME while seeking an engineering role, I was offered a position to assist a project commercially. The Operations Director at the time believed that gaining commercial experience would be beneficial. I found myself enjoying the work, and now, 17 years later, I am still part of the Commercial Department.
How has your career progressed since?
I joined Phoenix in 2007, transitioning from my role as an electrician to a Junior Surveyor. Initially, I sought a position as an engineer but was recommended to gain some commercial experience first. Now, over 18 years later, I find myself still engaged in the Commercial Department. Throughout my career here, I have had the privilege of contributing to several prestigious projects alongside a talented team across the various sectors in which Phoenix operates, including opportunities to work in Europe.
What skills do you need to be good at your job?
The ability to multitask, think quickly, and communicate effectively is essential. In the Commercial Department, it is important to be committed, organised, and adaptable, as plans can often change unexpectedly.
What do you enjoy most about your current role at Phoenix?
Addressing issues related to data analysis, critical thinking, and providing support to individuals is a rewarding experience. It is always gratifying to observe the effective implementation of my recommendations.
Why are Commercial / Surveying important in our business?
The Commercial Department holds an equal standing with all other departments within our business. Our role is to provide mutual support, with our main goal being the safeguarding of the business. This is achieved by assisting the Operational Team during the procurement process, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and effectively managing the expectations of both our clients and our supply chain.
How do you challenge yourself to reach new heights?
I am a driven individual who thrives on challenges and is determined to succeed. We have established ambitious standards for ourselves, which can make it challenging to manage expectations and achieve new heights. However, as a team, we have recently navigated numerous obstacles that, although daunting and overwhelming in the moment, have ultimately been very rewarding when reflected upon.
What has been your proudest achievement at Phoenix so far?
The past few years have presented significant challenges. As the business has expanded, it has introduced various obstacles. I have been responsible for supervising a team of individuals engaged in multiple projects at different phases (tender/live/legacy). Successfully navigating these responsibilities without major setbacks has been a considerable relief. This has involved effectively addressing and resolving numerous issues, whether they arose from a commercial perspective or from the extensive number of individuals within the Operational Team that these projects entail.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get into what you do?
Becoming a quantity surveyor requires a blend of technical knowledge, financial skills, and the ability to manage relationships within the construction industry. With the right education, practical experience, and continuous professional development, you can build a successful career in this field. It’s a role that offers varied responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities for career advancement.
Why Phoenix?
It is clear from firsthand experience that Phoenix demonstrates remarkable resilience and possesses the ability to surmount any challenges it may face, supported by the assurance that the foundation of the business rests on a dedicated and skilled group of individuals.
What Phoenix value resonates with you most?
I would suggest “Togetherness”, as I consider it to be a fundamental trait in our industry. The elements of collaboration, teamwork, and building strong relationships are essential to achieving success. It’s all about working as a cohesive unit, supporting one another to achieve common goals.
