Pushing the boundaries of engineering innovation
How did you get into what you do?
I’m an electrician by trade. I started my apprenticeship with the business after some encouragement from my family, who wanted to make sure I had a trade behind me – even though I originally had other career ambitions. I never set out to work in management, but an opportunity came up to become an estimator in the Crawley office. From there, I progressed into a QS role, and then into a project engineer role. My first project as a project engineer was the Bexley Business Academy.
How has your career progressed since?
I’ve progressed through the business, starting as a Project Manager, then serving as Operations Director for 11 years, and now currently holding the role of European Director. A pivotal moment in my journey was the opportunity to work on a project in Finland. With the support of my family, I took the leap and joined the project management team. I knew I wanted to become a leader on these projects, and that experience helped me grow and build the foundation to reach where I am today.
What skills do you need to be good at your job?
This role requires a balance of technical expertise and people skills. Compassion, empathy, and the ability to empower others are key traits. At the same time, you have to be able to maintain clear boundaries and ensure accountability within your teams.
Having in-depth technical knowledge of the product or service you’re delivering is essential – but just as important is being open to learning in areas where you’re less experienced. Motivating others is also critical. I believe strongly in leading by example; I would never ask someone to do something I wouldn’t do myself.
What do you enjoy most about your current role at Phoenix?
One of the most rewarding aspects is working with every department in the business. Everyone has a role to play, and we all share the same objective: delivering a quality end product for our clients.
I also get a real sense of pride when we receive a thank-you from a client at the end of a project – being able to share that recognition with the team is a great feeling. Innovation is another part I really enjoy. Our industry is constantly evolving, and I like the challenge of keeping up or getting ahead. Not every idea works out, but the drive to keep pushing forward is something I thrive on.
Outside of delivering projects, what else are you involved in at Phoenix ME?
I lead the IT team, who are instrumental in keeping our digital infrastructure running effectively. I’m also part of the Responsible Business Committee, which is committed to making Phoenix ME a positive, inclusive, and engaging place to work. It’s about more than just business – it’s about building a culture that people are proud to be part of.
How do you challenge yourself to reach new heights?
I’m always looking for ways to grow – whether that’s by stepping into unfamiliar territory, taking on difficult projects, or looking at how we can do things better as a business. I try to stay open-minded, surround myself with great people, and never settle for “good enough.” Personal growth often comes from discomfort, and I try to lean into that instead of shying away from it.
What has been your proudest achievement at Phoenix so far?
One of my proudest achievements was playing a key role in the project in Finland. It was a major personal and professional challenge that required me to step far outside my comfort zone. The experience helped shape me as a leader and gave me the tools and confidence to take on my current role. More broadly, I’m proud of the role I’ve played in helping Phoenix grow into the company it is today.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get into what you do?
Be open to opportunities – even the ones you didn’t expect or plan for. Some of the most important steps in my career came from paths I hadn’t initially considered. Also, be prepared to work hard and take accountability. Technical knowledge is important, but soft skills like communication, teamwork, and empathy are what will really help you stand out. Finally, surround yourself with people who support and challenge you – it makes all the difference.
Why Phoenix?
Phoenix offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where people genuinely care about the work and each other. There’s a strong sense of family, teamwork and shared purpose. It’s also a company that supports growth – both for the business and for individuals. I’ve experienced that firsthand throughout my career here. We’re not afraid to innovate, and we invest in our people, which makes a huge difference.
What Phoenix value resonates with you most?
Empowerment. It’s something I try to live every day in my role. Empowering others to make decisions, to take ownership, and to grow in their roles is incredibly powerful. When people feel trusted and supported, they perform at their best – and that benefits the entire business. It’s not just a value we talk about; it’s something we actively practise.
