Revitalising a Landmark: MEP Delivery for Battersea’s Iconic Transformation

Shell & Core Expertise Across Retail and Public Realm

Phoenix were appointed to deliver the full Mechanical, Electrical, and Public Health Shell & Core installation and commissioning works for Battersea Power Station Phase 2. This encompassed the Retail Areas, Food Hall, Cinemas, Events and Heritage Spaces, as well as the extensive External and Public Realm zones. Working closely with the Design Team, Phoenix developed and delivered the MEP scheme through prefabrication of landlord distribution systems. Each retail unit included multi-service MEP modules, PHX mechanical skids with controls, valves and energy meters, and prefabricated electrical service heads with BCWS supplies—streamlining on-site installation and coordination.

Residential Infrastructure and Plug-and-Play Innovation

Phoenix were subsequently appointed for Phase 3A, responsible for the full electrical infrastructure and commissioning across three 15-storey buildings, comprising 540 high-end residential properties. The development also included 44,000 sqm of basement and car park levels, 13,000 sqm of retail space, a gymnasium, and a playground area. Phoenix delivered NERS-compliant installations in line with accreditation, with off-site prefabrication of apartment utility cupboards in a complete “plug-and-play” format, significantly accelerating the installation timeline and quality assurance process on site.

Delivering Apple’s New HQ and Specialist Spaces

Within the iconic Battersea Power Station structure itself, Phoenix led the full fit-out of Apple’s new 50,000 sqm UK headquarters. Spanning six floors, the space featured a combination of open-plan desking, private offices, enclosed meeting rooms and a central open atrium. In addition to general staff areas, the fit-out included specialist facilities such as recording studios and executive spaces on Level 10, a wellness centre, kitchen and café on Level 5, and a primary reception at upper ground level. Phoenix also completed plant and storage rooms on Levels 4 and 6, as well as basement-level infrastructure. As services lead coordinator, Phoenix worked in collaboration with the client team to align the evolving MEP design with end-user requirements, ensuring optimal performance and integration throughout.

Event Space and Technical Systems Delivery

The redevelopment also featured the fit-out of the Event Space, situated across the 2nd to 4th floors of the Boiler House and visually connected to Turbine Halls A and B. This area was designed as a flexible, multipurpose venue for performances, VIP gatherings, and artist spaces—reflecting Apple Music’s identity and branding. It includes recording studios and bespoke back-of-house zones with connections to lounge areas and terraces overlooking the Thames. The Event Space was delivered as a cold ‘box-in-box’ shell for Apple’s internal fit-out team.

Phoenix’s MEP scope covered critical mechanical systems—cooling, chilled ceilings, low and high temp heating, ventilation, drainage, insulation and noise control—as well as complete electrical services including LV switchgear, UPS, data, life safety systems, lighting and controls. Testing, commissioning, and client training completed the turnkey delivery.
